New Blog coming soon!

I have so much to share from this season! Stay tuned for my new blog.

May 31, 2008 Taryn and Alex

Alex and Taryn's wedding was held at the Four Seasons in charming and beautiful Nevis, West Indies. Both the couple and the Four Seasons did an amazing job. One of Taryn's friends asked me how I thought the photos turned out the day after the wedding and we both had a little laugh because honestly it would have been difficult to take a bad picture of such a beautiful, well planned wedding in such an extraordinary setting. Bride's Magazine agreed and they will feature Taryn and Alex's wedding in their December issue.

Beautiful babies...

Ok, so Henry is not a baby anymore...but have you seen two more beautiful, joyful children before? It warmed my heart to be around them. Henry and Vivian are the children of Dan and Laura whose wedding I photographed several years ago. It was great to see their family so happy! These simple, sweet portraits were taken in their backyard the day before I headed out to San Francisco (photos to come).

Oh Henry... what a love.

His beautiful sister Vivian, who was just a tiny little one that last time I photographed her last year.

Cary and Karen in New York City

Last weekend I had a very memorable (they always are, lol) trip to New York City. Part of the weekend I spent with Cary and Karen whose wedding I will be photographing in October. It was great to meet them before the wedding and to play in New York. It was a little chilly but we had fun regardless. Thanks Cary and Karen!

One of the reasons I have fun shooting in big cities... the crowds. I love this guy on the phone with Cary and Karen in the background. You can't pose this stuff.

We took the ferry to Dumbo for this shot with the Manhattan skyline as the backdrop.

On the ferry.

Does this look familiar?

Not bad, right?

I think the banana peel on the right makes this shot for me...

Hell,yes- I'll see you guys October 4!

I love getting mail...

Ever since I was a little kid I have loved getting the mail. I order so much stuff through the mail these days that I am keeping the tradition alive. Today I received a nice surprise from Cary and Karen whose wedding I'm shooting in Vermont in October. Thanks guys, this is the coolest Save the Date I have ever seen- hands down.

It arrived in a poster tube!

Love it.... Can't wait for the wedding!!

Throwback: Vintage Karin

I was cleaning out my storage unit today and I found a bunch of my old photos from high school. I thought I'd share a few vintage shots with you, they definitely made me smile.

I shot this in Merida, Mexico when I was 15. I started taking photos when I was 12, but the trip to Mexico convinced me I wanted to explore photography as a career.

Another from the same trip.

My cousin's wedding in Pennsylvania.

I shot this before prom.

I shot this photo during a journalism workshop at Michigan State University when I was 16. I found these kids playing in front of their house in Lansing.

Stormy weather

No more perfect weather in Upstate New York, at least not for the early part of this week. At least I'll be able to break in my rain boots.

Want me to shoot you in New York City?

Not literally! I'll be up in New York City April 30- May 3. I have a few shoots set up already but I'd love to add a few more. So if you are in New York e-mail me and we'll see if we can coordinate a time!

Springtime=Portrait Time

It's been beautiful weather for portraits the past several days! I stopped by Gracie and Charlie's home this week to see how Charlie had changed since the newborn shots I took of him. I will be in town (more than usual) over the next few weeks so if you'd like a portrait session let me know. My sitting fee is $200. Some photos from our shoot below:

Love baby hands and feet. Charlie is now 4 months old.

So adorable... he didn't know what to make of the camera he just kept staring at it!

Gracie with her gorgeous curls giving me her rockstar pout. It's so fun being around kids of all ages. She went from this face, to the one below in about 30 seconds, literally.

Lol...

Look at his perfect little face... almost makes me want one.... almost.

Just hanging out in the backyard.

Machu Picchu

It was surreal... and one of very few things I could be happy to get out of bed at 4 am to see! I stood in the rain and and watched the clouds lift revealing the ruins at Machu Picchu. I wanted to scream and squeal, but everyone was so quiet so I just screamed in my own head.

Thank you, thank you, thank you to who ever was passing out the multipacks of ponchos. The color makes the photo.

Look how few people were there! It was amazing and the experience was so enhanced because the ruins were not overrun with tourists.

The guardhouse. What I saw when I arrived early in the am.

The steps where crops were grown.

Whoa... yeah don't get to close to the edge.

Guinea Pig for my birthday dinner in Peru

I hope that doesn't offend anyone! I'm usually not much of a meat eater but when I was in Peru last week I had to try one of their specialities: guinea pig. I had guinea pig confit at the the amazing Ciccioliona in Cusco followed by the trout, which was phenomenal. If you are headed to Cusco you must dine at Cicciolina- everything about it was exceptional. I couldn't have asked for a better birthday celebration. I went to Peru mainly to see Manchu Picchu- I have to say that I fell in love with South America. It was my first visit to the continent and I will be going back as soon as possible- maybe to Argentina or maybe Brazil! Peru was breathtaking and compared with Egypt I felt very safe. The people were incredible and sweet- all around just a great trip. I had already started planning my next trip to South America before I had even left Peru! Below are some shots from Cusco, in the next few days I'll post my photos from Machu Picchu.

Me too...

They are so into guinea pig in Peru that they had "The Last Supper" painted by a Spanish artist in the 1500s and Christ has none other than a guinea pig on his plate... This painting was on display at own of the churches in the Plaza de Armas in Cusco.

Inca everything... even cola. It tasted a lot like bubble gum.

Finding the sun

I just got back from a week long visit to Miami. I've been getting a ton of work done in airports and on my flights- ironically I get more done when I'm traveling than when I'm in my office! Below are some shots of the lifeguard stations on South Beach. I have trouble (I'm antsy) just laying out on the beach but I can walk (and unfortunately shop) for hours.

Egypt: Final thoughts

Egypt was amazing but it was also a lot of work (rewarding, good work- but certainly not leisure travel). This final shot is from the main market in Cairo. Notice all the eyes...

Egypt: Part 3

I spent about half of my trip cruising on the Nile. Here are some shots from the cruise and my stops at the towns of Aswan, Esna, Edfu, and Luxor.

Market in Luxor. Almost was robbed here by a guy trying to sell me drugs! Seriously shady but made some great photos.

Luxor.

Luxor Temple at night.

These guys were great. They actually made their business by throwing their merchandise onto our boat then bargaining over the price while we were waiting to go through the lock at Esna.

Egypt: Part 2

The Pyramids at Giza were a highlight of my trip, of course. Here are a few shots:

It's nice to come home to notes like this...

More Egypt soon... I just wanted to post this note from my 6.9.07 bride Nicole that made my day when I returned from Egypt:

Hi Karin,

We were so pleased to return home from our honeymoon to find our wedding album waiting for us!  It truly captures the day and brings back all the wonderful memories.  We’re so glad we found you and are thankful for all the photos you took that really captured the mood of the day.  People who couldn’t attend now feel like they were there just by looking at the pictures.  You’re great at what you do, from an artistic and professional standpoint.

Thanks very much,
Nicole & Ben

Egypt: Part 1

My last few days in Egypt were spent relaxing in the Red Sea town of Hurghada. The Red Sea is home to some of the best snorkeling and diving in the world so I spent part of time on the water, enjoying the sun and beautiful reefs.

A crew member on the yacht does his best Leonardo DiCaprio impression.

I don't have a lot of photos of myself, but when I saw this light I had to set up this shot of myself for a friend to take.

My resort in Hurghada. Very Star Wars in my opinion.

Biggest. Douchebag. Ever.

I could write an novella on this mess but when I was walking through JFK Wednesday I thought this New York magazine cover summed up my sentiments with stunning eloquence.

Coming soon.... Egypt!

I just got home from Egypt late last night! It was a really intense trip. Much more in the next coming days. Just one shot from Giza for now. My head is spinning catching up from being gone for two weeks!

Where I'm going it's 100 degrees...

I think I'll wait until I'm back to fess up about where I'm off to for the next two weeks. But it's 100 degrees there now and it's the trip of a lifetime. I will most likely be without e-mail for the duration of the trip (I'm back March 19). I will be able to receive calls at 585-576-0251. Can't wait to share the experience and the photos!

March 1, 2008 Liz and Jed

Last weekend I traveled to a remote area in the beautiful Dominican Republic for Liz and Jed's wedding. Las Terrenas was truly a special place, right up my alley. The natural beauty and relaxed atmosphere was amazing. Thanks so much to Liz and Jed for sharing it with me! I am very blessed to have incredible couples to work with, it never ceases to amazes me how lucky I am. It was great getting to know Jed, Liz, their family, and friends over the weekend. It was a heartfelt event- that along with the natural beauty of the area was inspiring to me.

The beautiful bride.

We did portraits before the ceremony, which ended up working perfectly. The light was incredible, plus we had plenty of time to play.

The palm trees where unreal.

See what I mean??

Thanks so much Liz and Jed! I hope you are having an incredible time in Buenos Aires.

My first cover!!!

I was walking through Barnes and Noble picking up some books and magazines for my next adventure (more on that later!) when a photo of a lovely and familiar couple caught my eye. I just about choked on my own tongue as I realized about 5 seconds later I had taken the cover photos.... lol! I was interviewed for a story on destination weddings for Elite Wedding Collection magazine a few months back and had also submitted some photos for them to use. I didn't realize the issue was for sale already! It's the spring/summer edition. A photo I shot in Tulum, Mexico of Terry and Jiaying is on the cover and on the inside is the beautiful photo of Meg and Ben taken in Jamaica. It's my first magazine cover for a national publication so I'm going out with some friends tonight to celebrate. It meant so much to me to see the cover in the bookstore. It has been a primary goal of mine since I was a preteen to see my photos in magazines. Feels awesome.

The cover!

Call me!

I kept my original phone number (585-576-0251) but I have replaced my phone with the new iphone. My old phone has gone to its' final resting place and unfortunately I was not able to retrieve the phone number in it or any voicemails that I may have received in the past few days. So call me so I can save your number in my new phone! And if you left a voicemail in the past 3-4 days call back, I wasn't ignoring you- I just never received your message!

Almost forgot- Curacao

In the blur of all the traveling I've been doing in the past several months I almost forgot to post photos from my vacation to Curacao in February. I love the Caribbean: I'd love to take a month or two and just island hop. Every island has such a distinct flavor. I can't wait to explore it more! In May I'll visit Nevis for the first time for Taryn and Alex's wedding- I can't wait!

One more reason to love the Caribbean: pirates.

A huge honor...

A few months back I was contacted by Jay Mallin who was writing a story about destination weddings for the photography trade publication PDN (Photo District News): a publication I began worshipping back in photo school at the Rochester Institute of Technology. I submitted some photos after the interview and I was so excited to see the photo of Yara and Khamen that I shot in Puerto Rico was chosen as the lead image for the story along with a supporting picture of Gordon and Debbie from their wedding I shot in Mexico back in February! Being recognized in PDN is a huge accomplishment for me. It's the April issue, below is the article titled "A Marriage Made Abroad."

Curacao is looking pretty good at the moment...

I'm snowed in, working, and I've just started editing the photos I took on vacation in Curacao. I wish I were there now... more pics tomorrow. Isn't it surreal?

Destinations was a success!

Thanks so much to everyone who attended the show Gary Ventura, Erich Camping, and I held at Booksmart Studio in Rochester. The opening was a lot of fun and I was amazed with the turnout! We will definitely be doing another show in the future. I'm hoping we can fill the gallery with sand and have steel drums next time. :) The show is coming down tomorrow. I had work from Aleta and Deji's wedding in Mexico, Ben and Meg's wedding in Jamaica, Yara and Khamen's wedding in Puerto Rico, and Ryan and Kristen's wedding in Jamaica displayed at the show. I will be contacting these couples to see if they are interested in the opportunity to purchase these huge (20x30 inches and 30x40 inches) mounted photos that are ready to hang on the wall. They are stunning! I might keep a few for my office.
Here's a photo of Erich in the doorway at the opening.

I *heart* Jet Blue

I'm back in town for a few days before heading back to the Caribbean for Jed and Liz's wedding in the Dominican Republic (I can't wait guys!). Curacao was incredible. I'll be posting some photos soon. I just wanted to write a quick post about Jet Blue and how thankful I am to Sergio, Carlo, and Matt at O'Hare International Airport in Chicago for getting me out of Chicago before mother nature dropped a foot of snow in Chi Town. I fly Jet Blue whenever possible and it's left me quite spoiled. The planes are new, the people are kind, and the flights are always comfortable. I had the unfortunate experience of flying United (worst. airline. ever.). To make a long miserable story short they cancelled one of my flights on the way to the Caribbean and they cancelled one of my flights on the way back home, the last of which left me stranded in Chicago with a huge snow storm looming. The soonest they were going to be able to get me out of Chicago was Wednesday (I was originally supposed to be home Monday!) and they were rude, nasty, made no efforts to place us on other airlines that were flying out, and offered no compensation for the incredible inconvenience caused by the cancellations. I was on the verge of a nervous breakdown and about to rent a car to drive 8 hours to get home when I saw a sign for Jet Blue. I knew they fly to Rochester via JFK, so I approached the ticket counter and Matt and Carlo got me on a flight standby. As I waited at the gate Sergio told me he would do his best to get me on the flight and that I was a priority. Even if that wasn't entirely true they made me feel like a priority. A crew member gave up his seat for me and Jet Blue got me home! I nearly cried (and anyone who knows me will tell you I'm not a crier) when he gave me my boarding pass. Can you believe that customer service? You guys blew United away. I love you Jet Blue, I'll never cheat on you again.

Taking off (again)

I was asked last week if I even had a home... This remark was in response to the aggressive travel schedule I've been enjoying and will continue to enjoy in the coming weeks. I have an apartment, of course, but I haven't seen much of it lately! Travel is really important to me so I wanted to make sure before my wedding season is in full swing that I see some parts of the world that I've been eager to experience. This week I'm going to Curacao with my mom. We haven't had the chance to take a trip together since I was a teenager, so I'm really looking forward to it! I will have e-mail access and will be checking it regularly but I will not have cell service. Check out the map below showing Curacao's location. It's going to be 88 degrees there! I can't wait.

Got immunizations?

I'm prepping for some exciting international travel in the coming weeks. Yesterday I went to the dr to get all the necessary shots. Polio??? I needed a polio booster!! Yikes... I also stopped at the bank to pick up a bit of foreign currency, tipping is very big in one of the countries I'm headed to. Below is a photo of the cash- can you guess where I'm going?

February 9, 2008 Debbie and Gordon

Wow! I don't even know where to start. Debbie and Gordon's wedding was amazing and I couldn't have asked for two more generous, thoughtful people to work with. One of the exhilarating parts of my job is being around people that are so in love- Debbie and Gordon glowed when they were together. Their families and friends were great too. Gordon's mom was a riot, I could have listened to her tell stories all night.
The wedding was held at Ceiba del Mar in Puerto Morelos, Mexico on the Mayan Riviera. The resort did an amazing job with the food at the welcoming party and the reception. The level of service at the hotel was exceptional, I honestly wanted to move in.

Getting ready...

Loved her dress, so simple and elegant.

Debbie was nervous before the ceremony, but I think she loved beautiful!

Being announced husband and wife.

Great musicians.

I love this shot. Gordon was looking at his wedding ring.
Thanks guys! I had such a great time.

First night in Mexico

Last weekend I traveled to the Mayan Riviera to photograph Gordon and Debbie's wedding in Puerto Morelos. This shot is from the welcoming party the night before the wedding. More to come soon! The wedding was phenomenal! Thanks so much Gordon and Debbie for making me feel so welcomed! You two were so wonderful to work for. What a rude awakening to arrive home to a nearly 80 degree temperature difference... I wish I was still in Mexico!

You are cordially invited....

Erich Camping, Gary Ventura, and I are having a show at the Booksmart Studio gallery space at 250 N. Goodman Street in Rochester. Everyone and I mean everyone (that means YOU reading this!) is invited to the opening Friday February 15 from 6-9pm. It's going to be a great party- think Bob Marley tunes and all the rum punch you can drink. The show is dedicated to our destination wedding work. We are hoping the work will jolt all of us Rochestarians out of our seasonal affective disorder, at least for one night!

Miami: For work and pleasure

My tolerance for Rochester winters is waning so I took some time to visit relatives in southern Florida, check out Miami, fill up on vitamin D, and to work remotely in the comfort of 78 degree weather. It's been just about ten years since the last time I visited Miami and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. There's something to be said for the sun elevating the mood of a population! It was a nice break from winter.

South Beach.

I loved the architecture in South Beach and the cocktails at the Delano weren't bad either.

Mojito at the Mandarin Oriental in Miami (the spa is rocks, not to be missed).

January 19, 2008 Selena and Eric

I've been to Puerto Rico a few times for weddings but this was my first time on the island's west coast in the charming little surfing town of Rincon. What a fantastic way to start the 2008 wedding season!! Eric and Selena had a lot of adversity to deal with (from lost luggage to rain delaying the ceremony by 1.5 hours!) but they handled it with incredible patience. Planning a wedding is a job in itself and planning a destination wedding adds even more logistics to consider. But they are totally worth it, in my opinion! Selena was so calm through everything, I was in awe of her. The ceremony was delayed by rain but the rain finally stopped and we had a beautiful sunset directly following the ceremony. The reception was a riot, packed with great dancers and tasty Puerto Rican food. Thanks so much Eric and Selena!

Selena was so great, she let me photograph everything! She was not the least bit shy. I burst out laughing when I was editing and found this shot of her holding her breath as her dress was being buttoned up.

Future heartbreaker. I think this cutie made it into about half of the wedding photos!

I love the expressions in this photo taken after the ring exchange.

Selena and Eric: E-session in Rincon, Puerto Rico

When I shoot destination weddings I always love getting together with the couple to do an engagement session before the wedding. It's a great chance to take advantage of the beauty of the area and the photos always compliment the wedding coverage. Here are a few of Eric and Selena before their wedding in Rincon.

January 4-7 I was in Tampa, Florida for the Digital Wedding Forum convention. It was a great experience and my first wedding photography convention. More from Vegas...

After the Kanye West show I spent the day exploring Vegas. I have a few New Years Resolutions: I'm in decent shape but this year I want to get toned up (not buff like female body builder buff, just get a little more definition in my muscles) and I overall just want to take the best possible care of myself that I can. To me that means more yoga, more organic foods in my diet, and remembering to savor everything I experience. Below are a few snaps from Vegas.

The strip...

The fountains at the Bellagio.

Unreal... Vegas was like a theme park for adults. The perfect spot for New Years.

New Years Eve with Mr. West

Ok, so I've got a little crush on Kanye West (I'm a sucker for a well dressed man)... What better man to spend New Years with? New Years Eve day I flew to Vegas to see Kanye perform at the Palms Casino. Easily this was the best New Years of my life. This was my first trip to Vegas and I have to say it was the perfect spot for New Years. The show started at 10:30pm and ended around 1:00am, so I counted down with Kanye and as 2008 began he went straight into "Good Life" and the place went crazy. I was on the floor it was so much fun! I'm not a huge sports fan but even I could pick out Kobe Bryant, Grant Hill, and Rick Fox out of the crowd. Kanye West is truly a gifted performer. 2008 is going to be phenomenal- it was a great start to my year!

Thanks Kristen and Ryan!

I have so much to blog! I had the most incredible New Years of my life and two days later I was in Florida for the Digital Wedding Forum convention in Tampa. I'm back in Rochester now, briefly, before I head down to Puerto Rico for Selena and Eric's wedding! I received this great thank you e-mail from Kristen (I shot her wedding in Jamaica back in November) when I returned home last night and wanted to share it. It means the world to me to get notes like this!

"I just wanted to let you know that Ryan and I love, love, love our pictures! I was intrigued by photojournalism because of how it truly captures the emotion of the day, and your work does exactly that and beyond. It was a really overwhelming day that went by so quickly. I love that we can look at our pictures and not only remember the day and all of the events but also remember how we and our guests felt. You captured Ryan in his most nervous moments before the ceremony, my excitement to marry the man of my dreams, our friends and family offering moving toasts, and of course my brother-in-law getting the party started on the dance floor (all of our guests took pictures of him but yours captured some of the most ridiculous moments).

One of the most important traits for a destination wedding bride is flexibility since there is so much uncertainty…flying to a new country, having unexpected weather, delayed flights, etc. It was great to work with you because of your flexibility, laid back nature and complete professionalism.

Finally, I want to thank you for being so prompt. We were able to see some of our picture on your blog only days after the wedding while we were still in Jamaica!! I know so many brides who have to wait months to get their digital files and we received ours in less than a month…not to mention we received hundreds!!!! My parents didn’t have a photographer at their wedding so I was always bummed that I couldn’t see what their wedding was like. I’m so excited to share these pics with my children someday…cheesy I know :)

I know you will continue to be successful in your career because you are so talented and you really understand brides.
Thank you for being amazing!!!!"
-Kristen (and Ryan)
